Musical Rock

Principles of Science: Sound Frequency, Waves, Resonance

Not a rock musical, but a musical rock, this specially cut lava boulder in the Court of Sound produces harmonious tones when struck with its accompanying mallet. Drag or strike a mallet over the grooved rock surfaces to hear different tones.

The Musical Rock is cut into several columns extending upwards from its uncut base; each column is a different length. When struck, each column resonates, or vibrates, at a different frequency, generating different tones. Although the sounds produced are octaves lower in pitch, the principle at work is identical to that of the household wind chime.
