Geared Piston

Principles of Science: Rotational Motion, Kinetic Energy, Work

Turn a crank that drives a piston back and forth, or up and down. The crank requires the user to apply force around a circular path. This motion is converted to linear motion using a crank shaft and connecting rod. A piston is a device that converts linear motion, motion in a straight line, to circular motion, or vice versa.

The geared piston demonstrates how motion can be converted into more useful forms. This back and forth motion can be used to drive a piston.
